Yet Bubser is against the Cadiz project without any rationale except for her comments made on Earth Day 2020 that “We will protect our water. Will stop things like Cadiz. ” 20 The Cadiz Water project began in 2009 and since then has had multiple court cases, new Bureau of Land Management (BLM) regulations from the Obama Administration put in place, and the Department of the Interior (DOI) has created new rules blocking the project. In California, while some environmentalist groups have pushed back against the project, it has still received the green light from California’s state environmental regulators and found in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). After winning several court cases between 2009-2017 the road blocks put in place by the BLM regulations and DOI rules were removed by Trump Administration 2017. Further federal lawsuits followed and in June 2019 the 9 th Circuit Court blocked the Trump administration from authorizing the project to use a railroad easement to build a water pipeline, so as to not build through federal lands. While Bubser has publicly denounced the project, three organizations that have given their endorsements to Bubser are list on the Cadiz Water project’s website as supporters.
